Our library and our writers centre is completely volunteer-run so there are almost infinite opportunities for you to help out.
Currently we open 10am to 12pm every weekday and 11am to 1pm on a Saturday and there are many shifts available. Do a shift once a week, once a fortnight, once a month if you please.

Volunteer Position: Social Media & Community Manager
Location: Mentone Library, Mentone, Victoria, Australia
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week (flexible weekday 10am–12pm or Saturday 11am–1pm)
Are you passionate about social media, creativity, and supporting local writers? Mentone Library, a hub for writers and readers, is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Social Media & Community Manager to help us connect with our community and promote the magic of storytelling!

About the Role:
1. As our Social Media & Community Manager, you will play a key role in promoting the library, its events, and its unique focus on writers. Your responsibilities will include:
2. Creating and scheduling one piece of content per week for Facebook and the library website.
3. Rewriting newsletter content into engaging social media posts that highlight upcoming events, writer workshops, and community initiatives.
4. Designing eye-catching graphics using Canva or similar tools to showcase our literary events and programs.
5. Responding to messages and inquiries on social media.
6. Updating the library website with event information and other content.
In addition to your online tasks, you will also be responsible for keeping the library open during your scheduled hours, welcoming visitors, and providing a friendly presence. (Don’t worry—it’s usually very quiet, so you’ll have plenty of time to focus on your creative work!)
What We’re Looking For:
+ Experience with social media platforms (Facebook) and content creation.
+ Proficiency in Canva or similar graphic design tools.
+ Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
+ A passion for literature, writing, and community engagement.
+ Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
+ A friendly and approachable demeanor for interacting with library visitors.

Literary Festival Director 2026
We turn 100 in 2025 so we are planning a village Literary Festival in 4-6 May, 2025, and the plan is for this to be an annual event. If you would like to be considered for the Literary Festival Director role in 2026 give us a bell.

Event Manager For Our Author Talks
We are looking for an event manager for our author talks. Responsibilities include sourcing and liaising with publishers/agents/talent, ticketing, booking the talent and the venue, marketing and advertising the event. It requires about 3 to 4 hours of your time per week that can be fit around your schedule. Training is available. This is an unpaid position but you will be creating contacts in the publishing industry and getting valuable experience in events management. Drop Graeme a line if you want to know more.
